How much is the tuition for SSPI classes?
Tuition for Basic Reserve Training is $450. This includes all books except those needed for First Responder and CPR certification. Tuition for Reserve In-Service training is $125.00
How often are these courses offered?
SSPI will offer three Basic Reserve Programs beginning in September of 2004 and four Reserve In-Service Programs. Students attend Basic Reserve Training one time and are strongly encouraged to attend Reserve In-Service yearly.
When is tuition payment due?
Tuition is due either at Orientation or no later than the first night of class.
Do I need to purchase any books?
No. Textbooks are provided and are yours to keep. Only the text used for the First Responder portion of the training is to be turned back in. This text is available for purchase at $50.00.
Does SSPI have a refund policy?
Yes. Tuition will be refunded in full before Orientation. After Orientation and before the first class 50% of tuition will be refunded less a 10% administrative fee.
What are the class hours?
Basic Reserve and Reserve In-Service classes meet two nights per week from 6:00PM until 9:00PM. Currently, Basic Reserve meets on Tuesday and Thursday and Reserve In-Service meets on Monday and Wednesday. This is subject to change however depending on the availability of instructors.
How do I know if class is cancelled due to weather?
No school announcements will be made on local TV, channels 4,5, and 7. Do not call the school because no one may be there.
Who are the instructors?
We feel we have some of the best instructors in the law enforcement field. All are certified by the Municipal Police Training Committee and have attended a "Train The Trainer" course sponsored by MPTC. Nearly all are active-duty or retired police officers of all ranks with many years of experience. All of our instructors are dedicated to providing the highest quality training and work constantly to keep their material current and timely.
What about exams?
At the conclusion of the Criminal Law portion of Basic Reserve training a 150 question, multiple choice, test will be given. There will be a final exam at the conclusion of the program.
What happens if I miss a class?
Attendance at all classes is mandatory. Missed classes must be made up within 90 days. The academy staff will assist students in making up classes.
If I have already attended a MPTC sponsored class, which is part of the SSPI program, am I required to attend that class again at SSPI?
Yes. SSPI feels if we are giving you a certificate of successful completion of our training program we want you to have our training.
How long are SSPI courses?
The Basic Reserve Training program is 124 hours. The Reserve In-Service Training Program is 21 hours.
Do I need to attend Basic Reserve Training before I can enroll in Reserve In-Service?
Yes. Basic Reserve is a prerequisite for Reserve In-Service. Students wishing to attend Reserve In-Service must submit a copy of their certificate showing successful completion of Basic Reserve or prior attendance at Reserve In-Service.
Do I need to be sponsored to attend SSPI courses?
Yes. Students must be sponsored by a police department or agency with arrest power under Massachusetts General Law.
May I bring a weapon to class?
SSPI strongly discourages students bringing weapons to class, as they will not be needed for any part of the training. In no case will a weapon be allowed in the building unless the student is in full uniform to include a uniform jacket if a jacket is worn.
Can I get CPR/First Responder Certification at SSPI?
Yes, this class is offered as specialized training at an additional cost.
